“It was fun!  I learned a lot of stuff.”  “This was awesome!” ”Loved it.”
“Great workshops!” “I had a great first time!”

These were just a few of many comments from the girls that attended 8th Annual Girl Wise Conference at the College of Lake County on April 30, 2011.  We had approximately eighty Junior High and High School girls participate in workshops conducted by Omni Youth Services, Boom Power, Lake County Volunteer Erica Lang and Lake County Health Department addressing school transitions, situational awareness, staying fit and life skills!  We were very fortunate this year to benefit from a grant secured by the State’s Attorney’s Office to purchase a number of supplies for the conference including custom tablecloths, giveaways and office supplies.

The day started off with Girls receiving a folder of information on various topics along with a pink backpack, which were donated by the College of Lake County.  Girls had the opportunity to visit various resource booths and participate in Jr’s Challenge activities. Roycealee Wood, Regional Superintendent of Schools gave the girls a warm welcome. The Honorable Sarah Lessman and the Honorable Valerie Boettle-Ceckowski were also in attendance and this year, we had the Honorable Maureen McIntyre from McHenry County joining us to observe and brought three foster children from McHenry County to  the conference. Given the success of last years parent workshop, we decided to again bring an exciting workshop to parents titled “The Blunt Facts,” presented by NICASA and the Mundelein Stand Up Task Force. Approximately twenty-five adults were present. Sara Migas from the Attorney General’s Office presented a workshop in the morning for all girls addressing Internet Safety and Cyberbullying.  Lunch was provided by the Regional Office of Education.  Omni Youth Services Reality Troupe entertained us with their exceptional talents and creativity on various teen-related topics.  Our day concluded with a raffle that included amazing give-away. Our achievement can only be attributed to organizations working together to make this conference possible.  We thank all that spent their time and energy to make this extraordinary day a success!

The Nineteenth Judicial Circuit along with the Lake County Juvenile Justice Council, the College of Lake County and the Regional Office of Education continue to partner with agencies in the community to present the Annual Girl Wise Conference. We have not sit the date yet, so check back on this page just after the beginning of the year. Last year’s conference was held at the College of Lake County on Saturday April 30, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and there was no fee to attend. The conference is geared towards junior high and high school age females and offers various workshops that promote healthy bodies, minds, relationships and substance abuse awareness. Parents will also have an opportunity to attend an informative workshop in the morning.

The day began with the participants having an opportunity to visit different resource booths to gather information about available programming in the community. Additionally, staff from the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit presented the Jr’s Challenge Course and had the girls participate in activities that promote teamwork, self-esteem and leadership. The girls were then off to their morning workshops. The Regional Office of Education provided free lunches for all girls and following lunch, the girls watched a play performed by Omni Youth Services Reality Troupe. The girls then attended their afternoon workshops and the day concluded with door prizes and a raffle. Every girl left a winner as they received a goodie bag at the conclusion of the conference.
